Nov. 17 - Dutch officials were on Monday checking poultry farms for a highly infectious strain of bird flu following an outbreak in a central village of the virus which could infect humans.
Dutch media reported that the birds would be gassed and that two farms in the immediate vicinity of the infected farm had already been given the all-clear.
Roadblocks have been set up around one kilometre from the village to prevent people not on official business entering.
Tests showed that the bird flu viruses in Europe are similar to one that devastated poultry flocks in South Korea, the intergovernmental World Organization for Animal Health said.
The Dutch measure, which has also halted all exports, could soon lead to shortages of chicken meat and eggs in the European Union because the Dutch are the region's top supplier of both eggs and poultry meat.
With a population of less than 17 million, the Netherlands is the world's second largest exporter of agricultural products after the United States, selling $79 billion euros ($99 billion) of agricultural goods abroad last year.
Over the past year, nearly 10 percent of the entire swine population in the US has been wiped out by a highly lethal virus. Dried blood plasma is a relatively new pig feed ingredient, described as a "unique protein source for early-weaned pigs."
The pig disease, which causes diarrhea and vomiting, has spread to 30 states. Cases of PEDv were also reported in Mexico during the latter part of 2013, and Canada had its first confirmed case in mid-January
